MISSED CONNECTIONS
Missed Connections examines the purgatory of love that is completely within grasp yet somehow much too far away.
Menotti’s The Telephone gives us a joyful set of phone calls between Lucy and her friends as Lucy’s boyfriend Ben tries his best to propose. Befuddled by Lucy’s refusal to hang up the telephone, Ben meets Lucy where she is—he leaves their apartment to give her a ring himself, popping the question phone to phone.
In Poulenc’s La voix humaine, we witness one side of a final telephone call between two lovers. Delivered via monologue, our protagonist traverses an emotional cornucopia as she begins to process what’s happening in the moment and what is yet to come.
As we enter a new quarter-century, who’s to say what technological innovations lie ahead of us? Inevitably, there will be new solutions for bridging our divides just as there will be new challenges to social connection. But let us resolve to keep our loved ones close and avoid any Missed Connections.
